Language is probably the fundamental human characteristic and skill: just about everything else depends on it in some way, and to some degree. In this group, we’ll investigate and discuss all sorts of fascinating things in the field of linguistics. This could include: language histories and development; word and phrase origins; how children learn to speak; dialects and accents; slang and jargon; language and society; language and the brain; media and language; ideas about ‘correctness’; and many other possibilities. The group will be as interactive in possible, encouraging members’ contributions – but no prior knowledge is needed, just curiosity and open-mindedness.
